We are here already 2 nights staying with Sikko and Melanie. We know them from our time in Nigeria. It is a great reunion after 20+ years. They live in the middle of the wine region. On the way to here we stopped at Jacobs Creek winery in the Barossa valley for a wine tasting. Rudy prefers to drink their wine in NL. Sikko is a wine drinker so the next day they took us to an exclusive wine tasting/restaurant for lunch. Later we made a tour through the Adelaide Hills winery area and stopped in the old German town of Hahndorf where in 1839 a group of Lutheran refugees settled and started the cultivation of wine. In the evening many of their friends came over for a bonfire BBQ (ANZAC memorial day). They all brought a bottle of their favorite local wine. It was a lovely evening outside in the garden.
Today a visit to Adelaide. Sikko and Melanie took us in their family car for a City tour. First a stop at the Sunday market in Stirling. Unfortunately there was a long row of cars winding through the steep streets looking for a parking place. Huge congestion . We decided to give this a miss and drove on.
To get to the city from the East you have to cross the Adelaide Hills. The winding decending roads has several gravel truck ramps to stop runaway trucks. These hills and the lack of a good sea harbor results in a slower development than the other major cities. The city is however catching up with large scale housing development in the old dock area.
The inner city is much more breathable (wider and less busy) than Melbourne. Less high-rise buildings and the older sandstone government/public buildings nicely bunched together. Also here a large asian influence which we enjoyed via an extensive Yamcha style brunch.
The Torrance river running through the city is too small for shipping. The harbor is therefore outside town. Plans to connect the sea better to the city were planned but never realized. As a result the sea side has nice beaches and boulevards with accompanying attractions and expensive seaside housing. On the drive back over the hills we admired the view of the city lights on windy point.
We had a rest day. Rudy behind the laptop en Jamaliah shopping with Melanie. Sikko was working from home behind his computer.
