What a difference. No sound other than the lapping of water on to white beach sand. We left Hobart and drove some 40 km south along the coast. At Kettering we boarded the ferry for the 20 min crossing to Bruny island. We drove 64 km south to the other end of the island where there is a National Park campsite under the trees next to a beach.
On the short 5.5 km circular walk over the peninsula back to the campsite we saw an echidnas shuffling his pointy nose under plants looking for insects. On one side of the path there had been a bush fire. You can see from the photo that those cones had opened while on the other side the seeds were still in the cone.
Only 3-4 other campers here. Others mostly come to do the walk and leave. We now have this paradise almost to our own.
A quiet night with the sound of the ocean waves in the background. A good sleep.
We drove to the lighthouse close by. It was built in 1836 after several ship disasters. It ran on whale oil but is now replaced with a new one on solar power.
At Adventure bay we made a 7.5 km, 4 hr walk. It started off in the bay area but on the coastal side we climbed some 300 m along the cliff up to the top. For Rudy it was too steep. He had to regularly stop when he was getting dizzy. Still he made it. The walk down through the forest was a bit easier. Many large old trees with burn marks but still growing.
The camping for the night (NP) is on a narrow strip of land connecting the 2 Islands of Bruny. There should be small penguins coming ashore at sunset. We did not see them when we came back from another unsuccessful stroll at 20:00 hrs along the beach searching for small penguins in the which come to shore nesting after sunset. This morning we saw at the Neck on Bruny where their nests are. But it was too far to walk to there last night.
