In Quorn we walked around the picturesque railway junction town waiting for the NP office to open. The town has several large sandstone buildings beside all the timber hotels and shops. It must have been important in its hay days.
With the gathered information, we drove up to the Flinder range NP. The road passes through bush land which is remarkably green following the recent rain/floods. Closer to the mountain range the hills are covered with pine trees. They must be native trees since they are everywhere. The course of the rivers you could follow by the large old eucalyptus trees.
In the park visitor centre, we reserved a campsite on the northern side of the park. It was a great drive over the mountains and through the riverbed in the gorge. Good that we had 4×4 and high clearance. The campsite is under the gum and pine trees in a (dry) river bend. Before sunset we made a 4km return walk to the ruins of an old farm settlement.
Note: we have been traveling almost 2 months here in East Australia and yesterday and today are the first time we used our fly nets. The flies are horrendous.
It was a cloudy day today. In the afternoon we even had several heavy rain showers. The usually dry Flinder range was already green from previous downpours. We noticed that already when driving through the gorge going out of the park and later when driving through it from North to South. Many times you cross or drive through river valleys. It reminded us of the drives through the wadis in Oman. It was good that we were driven a Toyota Hilux with high clearance and 4×4. No problems and full of adventure. Just outside the park we had again internet and managed to book an oil change service in 4 days time. The car deserves it. Till then we will explore the area around Port Augusta. Our first stop will be another gorge (hiking instead of driving) in the Mount Remarkable NP tomorrow.
