It was raining through the night but had cleared up in the morning. Nice and sunny and 20+ deg. The end goal today is visiting Rohana and Allan in Brisbane. So what can we “afford” as detour and arrive before sunset. We have to drive along the Sunshine coast was the answer. So that is what we did. From Noosa Heads to Caloundra we tried to follow the coast (with a lunch break in Sunshine Coast). As usual that was a bit of a disappointment . The coastal road does not only follow the coast but snakes in and out of the towns with only here and there a clear view of the ocean. Many attractively designed 4-storied apartment blocks are along the roads and in some town centers are higher buildings but they are less massive than expected.
When we reached Brisbane it was Friday rush hour. We needed to be at one of the suburbs on the South side. With our combined navigation skills we managed to reach our friend’s house without problems. The evening was spent catching up on 34 years of history.
Near to where we stayed is a shopping center with busstop. The bus goes every 15 min, drives over a dedicated bus lane into the city centre. Fantastic quick service and only $0,5. Becase it is cheaper to build roads than train/tram lines these suburbs can be hooked up quickly. Not many people take the car into town but leave it at the shopping mall/bus station.
The river flowing through Brisbane CBD is very windy. The center is in one of the many bends. You can easily walk from one side to the other. Cycle paths and walking paths follow the river. In fact they are built on stilts standing in the river bank. Same with the motorway. In this way the trafic in the CBD is limited, resulting in a pleasant walk. It was Saturday so there were many stalls along the river. Don’t know if they are there during the week.
We just wandered around taking in a museum, lunch, some old and new buildings and the scenery along the river. It was a pleasant 25 deg and a warm breeze. The day was topped off by home made pizza from Allan and looking at old pictures of Brunei.
