The drive of 260 km to this park was relaxing. The road winds over forested hills with large grass fields left and right. This is cattle country. Roma in fact has the largest cattle market from Australia. From the main road it is still a 70 km drive through cattle land to get to the entrance of the gorge and National Park. We drove into the park/gorge to the visitors center to pick up the trail map. From here we did a short walk to a Rock Pool and tomorrow we will attempt the long walk along and inside the gorge.
Tonight we are staying at a camp ground just before the park on one of the ridges of the gorge. We have a great view over the valley to the cliff on the other side.

The view of the Canarvon mountain ridge in the morning was fantastic. For view this hilltop campsite gets 10 points! Rudy sat in the chair in the sun for an hour admiring the view in silence until Jamaliah got ready. Several other campers also camped on the ridge. Our German neighbors had a 4×4 Mercedes just like ours in Holland. They are in Australia for a year and shipped their camper “Hemingway” over..
The gorge walk starts at the large day use area near the visitors centre. It has picnic tables under large gum trees and various palm trees. The main track is over a well maintained sand path winding over hills (with steps) and a total of 6 river crossings (on stepping stones). Our destination was the Art Gallery and the Amphitheater. It was 18 – 22 deg with a nice cool breeze and sunny. Ideal walking weather through this sandstone gorge. After 6 km we turned off the main track to see the aboriginal “art gallery”. On the bottom of the sandstone cliff many hand prints were stenciled but there were also other patterns and shapes carved into the soft rock. Some visitors in the 50’s and early 60’s also left their markings. The walk goes on for another 4 km but we decided to turn back to visit the Amphitheater. Via ladder you can climb up and through a crack in the rock to a high closed off natural amphitheater. It had a great echo. It took us over 4 hours to do this 13 km hike.
We enjoyed the walk out of the gorge to the camper. Since we are a bit running out of time, so instead of staying another night here, we drove 200 km towards the coast and stopped at the Bouhinia Roadhouse/petrol station for the night. It had hot showers! so we are clean again 😁.
