To protect the Island and England from a French invasion this fort was built in 1680. It was already under siege by William of Orange in a struggle for the English Crown against King James II. After that the 400 men garrison was never attacked. Only during the Irish freedom war of 1919- 1921 it was in the middle of a failed attempt by the Irish to overthrow the English. Later after the peace settlement it was torched and left to decay.

We decided to stay the night on the carpark at the fort and enjoy the panoramic view and of course the fish and chips.
